intro evaluation

Introduction

For my magazine I designed a front cover, a contents page and a double page spread.I did this by using various software programmes;
-Photoshop
-Indesign
-Illustrator
These helped me to edit my photos to a better standard but to also make my magazine look professional.
I looked at other magazines to give me a rough idea how to lay it out.

I chose to base my magazine for 17-23 year olds because they tend to buy more magazines than any other age group. I based my music genre on a variety of different types but stuck to indie and rock.

Introduction

Introduction

I gained ideas for my front cover by analysing other magazines. I was able to see the different angles used by the photographer: birds eye, worm eye view, mid shot, long shot etc. The colours used for magazines were also important as this drew attention for readers.

With my magazine my aim was to show student life at the college as I feel this is one of the most important parts. I was going to show this by getting bands to play at the open evening but to also have students come in to give their personal opinion to possible students. I included a questionnaire to see if the student would fit in/enjoy the college, the food available, pictures to show what happened throughtout last year, extra actitvities the possible students may enjoy trips and finally courses that we offer. These are the reasons why I included them in the contents page.

Textual analysis
Magazine, contents page (NME);
The header has bold italic letters in the middle to state what the page is about. On the left hand side it contains 14, 66 and 30 - the artists positioned in the charts. With each number comes the name of the band/artist and a small quote about there music or new album. On the bottom right there's an advertisement for the magazine. It states the discount you get if you subscribe and tells you the cheap price in yellow to make it stand out and appeal to the customers.
The main image is in the middle and is the biggest image on the page.

Double page spread feedback

Could have more cover lines and make it look more professional. I'd also prefer it if the image was in colour instead of black and white - luke

More cover lines should be included and make the font bolder - sammie

Contents page feedback

Jill feedback: Try defining each article by having a summary/title or name in bold or a different colour at the top of each page number. You need one morecontent number underneath the black line on the left as there is too much white space. The photo's may be too uniform in the way that they are aligned at the moment. Perhaps try tilting them or using a polaroid type of framing to make them stand out.

Luke feedback: It looks professional - the use of the red borders around the images as well as having the artists name bolder/bigger than the rest of the writing.

Sammie: the title of the page should be 'contents page' and the masthead of the magazine should be small in the right top hand corner of the page.
the pages of the storys on the photos would be better in a different colour.
the photo of the cover would be better in the bottom right hand corner with a slight slant on it.

Feedback front cover

Front cover from Luke: Likes the use of red for "Nicole Magnus", the red also goes with the title showing continuation. Looks basic. Nice title font. Could add more. The image is good. It could be organised further as well as including more cover lines

Contents page

This is my contents page.

Front cover

This was one of the images I took but I decided not to use it as it was too blurry and this could make the magazine look cheap and tatty,

This is the logo I designed for my magazine that I used throughout the magazine

The front cover on the left is my final one, but the cover on the right was  the one I was designing and changed parts of it to make it look more professional.

This is a screen shot of one of the cover lines on my magazine.

 This is a screen shot of the colour level that I adjusted it to to make the black and white image look good.
